Indications
- Short-term management of generalised anxiety disorder and tension states
- Pruritus associated with urticaria, atopic dermatitis, and contact dermatitis
- Pre-operative and pre-procedural anxiolysis and sedation
- Adjunct in alcohol withdrawal for anxiety and agitation
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Hydroxyzine, Cetirizine, or piperazine derivatives
- Prolonged QT interval or congenital QTc prolongation — Hydroxyzine prolongs QT
- Pregnancy (especially first trimester) — neonatal effects reported; avoid in breast-feeding
Side effects
- Sedation and drowsiness — caution when driving or operating machinery
- Dry mouth, urinary retention, and constipation (anticholinergic effects)
- QT prolongation at high doses — ECG monitoring in at-risk patients
