Indications
- Abdominal colic and cramping in functional bowel disorders
- Irritable bowel syndrome in which spasmodic pain predominates
- Spasmodic abdominal pain following gastroenteritis
- Biliary and renal colic, as an adjunct to definitive management
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Dicyclomine, Mefenamic Acid or other fenamates
- Glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, obstructive uropathy or paralytic ileus
- Active peptic ulceration, gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcerative colitis
- Infants, and the third trimester of pregnancy
Side effects
- Dry mouth, blurred vision and urinary hesitancy from the anticholinergic component
- Diarrhoea, nausea and abdominal discomfort
- Drowsiness or dizziness
- Palpitations or flushing (uncommon)

What is Meftamist Spas tablet used for?
Meftamist Spas contains Dicyclomine 10 mg, an antispasmodic, with Mefenamic Acid 250 mg, an anti-inflammatory analgesic. It is prescribed for cramping abdominal pain: intestinal colic, spasm after gastroenteritis, irritable bowel syndrome with prominent cramping, and as an adjunct in biliary or renal colic.
What is the difference between Meftamist Spas and Meftamist Forte?
Meftamist Forte is a straightforward analgesic and antipyretic, Mefenamic Acid 500 mg with Paracetamol 325 mg, for general pain and fever. Meftamist Spas adds Dicyclomine, an antispasmodic, at a lower Mefenamic Acid strength, so it is chosen when the pain is cramping and abdominal rather than musculoskeletal.
Does Meftamist Spas cause dry mouth or drowsiness?
It can. Dicyclomine is an anticholinergic, and dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary hesitancy and drowsiness are recognised effects of that class. Anyone who drives or operates machinery should discuss this with the prescriber, and the combination is avoided in glaucoma and obstructive uropathy.
