Panzomic 40 is prescribed for acid-related disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract: gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and reflux oesophagitis, duodenal and gastric ulcer, gastric injury caused by anti-inflammatory painkillers, and as part of Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy. It reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces rather than neutralising acid already present.
The active molecule and the 40 mg strength are the same, but the presentation is not. The injection is given intravenously in hospital when a patient cannot swallow, is vomiting, or is being treated for a bleeding ulcer. Panzomic 40 is the oral tablet used in clinic and at home, including when a patient is stepped down from injectable therapy. Which form is appropriate is a decision for the treating physician.
Long-term proton pump inhibitor therapy is common in reflux maintenance and in patients on continuous NSAID treatment, but it is not risk-free. Extended use has been linked to low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency and a higher fracture risk, so treatment should be reviewed periodically and continued only for as long as your physician directs.
