Rx GastroenterologyIndications
- Primary biliary cholangitis (formerly primary biliary cirrhosis)
- Dissolution of small, radiolucent cholesterol gallstones in a functioning gallbladder, in patients unsuitable for or declining surgery
- Cholestatic liver disease and biliary sludge, including the cholestasis associated with cystic fibrosis
- Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, under specialist supervision
- Bile reflux gastritis
Contraindications
- Radio-opaque (calcified) stones, pigment stones, or stones too large to be expected to dissolve
- A non-functioning or non-visualising gallbladder, or obstruction of the cystic duct or common bile duct
- Acute cholecystitis, cholangitis, or frequent episodes of biliary colic
- Known hypersensitivity to bile acids
- Severe hepatic impairment or advanced decompensated liver disease
Side effects
- Loose stools or diarrhoea, the most frequently reported effect and usually related to the amount taken
- Abdominal discomfort, nausea and indigestion
- Itching, particularly during the early weeks of treatment for cholestatic disease
- Transient rise in liver transaminases
- Uncommon: calcification of gallstones during therapy, urticaria, and worsening of pre-existing severe liver disease

Udomist 300 contains ursodeoxycholic acid and is used in cholestatic liver disease – its longest-established indication is primary biliary cholangitis – as well as in biliary sludge, cholestasis linked to cystic fibrosis, bile reflux gastritis and the gradual dissolution of small cholesterol gallstones in a gallbladder that is still working normally.
How long does Udomist 300 take to dissolve gallstones?
Gallstone dissolution with ursodeoxycholic acid is a slow process measured in months rather than weeks, and progress is checked by ultrasound rather than by symptoms. Stones can recur after treatment stops. It only works on small, radiolucent cholesterol stones in a functioning gallbladder, and has no effect on calcified or pigment stones. Your physician decides how long treatment continues.
Does Udomist 300 cause diarrhoea?
Loose stools are the effect patients most commonly notice with ursodeoxycholic acid, since it is a bile acid and unabsorbed bile acids draw water into the colon. It is usually mild and often settles. Persistent or severe diarrhoea, worsening itching, or yellowing of the eyes or skin should be reported to your physician.
