Indications
- Acute otitis media caused by susceptible organisms
- Acute maxillary sinusitis and acute bacterial exacerbation of bronchitis, where an oral cephalosporin is appropriate
- Pharyngitis and tonsillitis due to susceptible streptococci
- Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections caused by susceptible bacteria
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefpodoxime or to any other cephalosporin
- History of a severe or immediate allergic reaction to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics
- Not indicated for viral illness such as the common cold or influenza, where an antibiotic offers no benefit
- Use only under physician supervision in significant renal impairment or where there is a history of antibiotic-associated colitis
Side effects
- Diarrhoea, loose stools, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain
- Rash, itching or urticaria — stop the medicine and seek help urgently if there is facial swelling or difficulty breathing
- Oral thrush or nappy-area candidiasis, particularly with longer courses
- Headache; rarely, persistent or blood-stained diarrhoea suggesting Clostridioides difficile-associated colitis

Antacids and acid-reducing medicines can lower how much of the drug is absorbed, so mention any that the child is taking. Shake the reconstituted bottle before each dose and follow the storage instruction on the label.
Will Podomic 100 D/S help with a cold or the flu?
No. Colds, influenza and most coughs and sore throats are caused by viruses, and cefpodoxime has no effect on viruses. Using an antibiotic for a viral illness exposes the child to side effects with no benefit and contributes to resistance in the community. Podomic 100 D/S is a Schedule H1 medicine and should be given only when a doctor has prescribed it for a suspected or confirmed bacterial infection.
