Indications
- Acute infective diarrhoea and dysentery of mixed bacterial and protozoal origin
- Intestinal amoebiasis and giardiasis
- Bacterial gastroenteritis caused by susceptible enteric organisms
- Associated abdominal bloating and flatulence, addressed by the simethicone component
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones, nitroimidazoles or any excipient of the suspension
- Epilepsy, other seizure disorders and active central nervous system disease
- Children, adolescents and pregnancy — use only under a physician’s direction, as fluoroquinolones may affect developing cartilage
Side effects
- Nausea, vomiting and a metallic taste, largely related to metronidazole
- Headache, dizziness and disturbed sleep
- Darkening of the urine, which is harmless and settles once the course is finished

Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent that is not absorbed from the gut. It breaks down trapped gas bubbles in the intestine, which relieves the bloating, distension and flatulence that commonly accompany infective diarrhoea.
