- Short-term management of constipation, including constipation that has not responded to dietary fibre and adequate fluids
- Constipation where straining at stool is undesirable, such as after anorectal surgery or in patients with haemorrhoids
- Constipation associated with reduced mobility or with medicines that slow bowel transit
- Bowel evacuation before abdominal or endoscopic procedures, where a physician has prescribed it
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to sodium picosulfate or to any excipient of the formulation
- Intestinal obstruction, paralytic ileus, or a suspected acute surgical abdominal condition such as appendicitis
- Active inflammatory bowel disease or toxic megacolon
- Severe dehydration or significant fluid and electrolyte disturbance
- Undiagnosed abdominal pain, especially with nausea and vomiting
Side effects
- Abdominal cramping, colic or general abdominal discomfort
- Loose stools or diarrhoea, more likely if the dose exceeds what is needed
- Nausea
- Fluid and electrolyte loss, including low blood potassium, with prolonged or excessive use
- Uncommonly, dizziness or fainting linked to abdominal cramping or straining
- Hypersensitivity reactions such as rash or itching

Picomist Syrup contains Sodium Picosulfate 5 mg per 5 ml and is used for the short-term management of constipation, including constipation that has not responded to fibre and fluids, and for bowel clearance before certain procedures when a physician prescribes it.
How does Picomist Syrup work in the body?
Sodium picosulfate is a prodrug that is not active when swallowed. Colonic bacteria convert it into its active form in the large bowel, where it stimulates the colonic mucosa to increase propulsive movement and reduces reabsorption of water and electrolytes, softening the stool. Because activation is local, the effect is not immediate.
Can Picomist Syrup be taken every day?
No. Picomist Syrup is a stimulant laxative intended for short courses, not for continuous daily use. Prolonged or unsupervised use can lead to fluid and electrolyte loss and to reduced bowel responsiveness. Use it only as directed by your physician, and see your doctor if constipation keeps returning.
