Indications
- Fever in children, including fever after immunisation
- Throat, ear and upper respiratory pain with inflammation
- Teething and dental discomfort
- Musculoskeletal pain after minor childhood injury
- Situations where a standard-strength suspension allows finer measurement than the double-strength presentation
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to mefenamic acid, other fenamates, paracetamol or any NSAID
- Active gastrointestinal ulceration, bleeding or inflammatory bowel disease
- Significant liver or kidney impairment, and children who are dehydrated or vomiting
- Neonates and infants below the age judged appropriate by the prescriber
Side effects
- Loose stools or diarrhoea, the characteristic effect of mefenamic acid
- Nausea, vomiting and abdominal discomfort
- Drowsiness, irritability or headache
- Skin rash and other hypersensitivity reactions, which are uncommon
