Indications
- Acute bacterial sinusitis, tonsillitis and pharyngitis caused by susceptible organisms
- Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and other lower respiratory tract infections
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections due to susceptible organisms
- Skin and soft-tissue infections caused by susceptible bacteria
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or to any other cephalosporin antibiotic
- History of a severe or immediate hypersensitivity reaction to penicillins, carbapenems or any other beta-lactam
- Hypersensitivity to any excipient of the tablet
- Use only under physician supervision in significant renal impairment or with a history of antibiotic-associated colitis
Side effects
- Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting or abdominal discomfort
- Headache and dizziness
- Skin rash, itching or urticaria; overgrowth of candida during therapy
- Transient rise in liver enzymes; rarely Clostridioides difficile associated colitis, which needs prompt medical attention

What is Cefumist 500 tablet used for?
Cefumist 500 contains Cefuroxime 500 mg and is prescribed for bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms – commonly sinusitis, tonsillitis, exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections and skin or soft-tissue infections. The treating physician decides whether it fits a particular infection.
Is Cefumist 500 a strong antibiotic?
Strength is the wrong frame for antibiotics. Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin with a broader gram-negative reach than first-generation agents and more beta-lactamase stability than older beta-lactams. What matters is whether the organism causing your infection is susceptible to it, which is a clinical judgement.
Can I stop Cefumist 500 once I feel better?
No. Symptoms often settle before the infection is fully cleared, and stopping early leaves behind the least susceptible organisms – the mechanism behind much antibiotic resistance. Complete the course your physician prescribed, and go back to them if you cannot tolerate the tablets rather than simply stopping.
