Indications
- Acute otitis media and pharyngotonsillitis caused by susceptible organisms
- Acute bronchitis and other lower respiratory tract infections responsive to cefixime
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections due to susceptible gram-negative organisms
- Paediatric infections in which the physician judges a probiotic to be a useful adjunct during the antibiotic course
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or to any other cephalosporin
- History of a severe or immediate hypersensitivity reaction to penicillins or any other beta-lactam
- Hypersensitivity to Lactobacillus preparations or to any excipient of the dry syrup
- Caution and physician review in significant renal impairment or a history of antibiotic-associated colitis
Side effects
- Loose stools, diarrhoea, abdominal pain or flatulence
- Nausea and vomiting
- Skin rash, urticaria or itching
- Rarely, antibiotic-associated colitis or transient changes in liver and renal laboratory values

What is Cefimist LB 50 dry syrup used for?
It is prescribed for bacterial infections susceptible to cefixime, typically ear, throat, lower respiratory and uncomplicated urinary infections in children. The Lactobacillus is an adjunct, not the treatment. Only the treating physician can judge whether this combination suits a particular infection.
Why does Cefimist LB 50 contain Lactobacillus?
Antibiotics act on the gut's resident bacteria as well as on the organism causing the infection, which is one reason loose stools are common during a course. The 60 million Lactobacillus spores in Cefimist LB 50 are included with the intention of supporting normal gut flora while the cefixime does its work.
Is Cefimist LB 50 a Schedule H1 medicine?
Yes. Cefixime is listed under Schedule H1 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, so the pack carries the red-line warning, it cannot be sold without a valid prescription, and the pharmacist has to enter the prescription details in the Schedule H1 register.
