Indications
- Acute otitis media and other ear, nose and throat infections where a higher-strength amoxycillin-clavulanate is considered appropriate
- Acute bacterial sinusitis, tonsillitis and pharyngitis caused by susceptible organisms
- Lower respiratory tract infections including community-acquired pneumonia and acute bronchitis
- Susceptible urinary tract, skin and soft-tissue infections
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to penicillins, to clavulanic acid or to any excipient of the suspension
- Earlier episode of jaundice or hepatic dysfunction linked to amoxycillin-clavulanate
- History of a severe immediate hypersensitivity reaction to any other beta-lactam antibiotic
- Suspected infectious mononucleosis, in which aminopenicillins frequently cause a rash
Side effects
- Loose stools or diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting
- Rash, urticaria or itching, which should be reported before the next dose
- Oral or nappy-area candidiasis
- Transient increases in liver enzymes; rarely cholestatic jaundice or Clostridioides difficile associated colitis

Strength, and only strength. Duo DS carries Amoxycillin 400 mg with Clavulanic Acid 57 mg, double the Amoxycillin 200 mg with Clavulanic Acid 28.5 mg of the standard Almoxymist Clav DS. The molecules and the way they work are the same, so the two are not interchangeable measure for measure.
Why would a doctor prescribe a double-strength amoxycillin-clavulanate syrup?
A higher-strength suspension lets the prescribed milligram dose be delivered in a smaller volume of liquid, which is easier to give to a young child. The choice between the standard and double strength rests with the physician, based on the child's weight, the infection being treated and local resistance patterns.
Does Almoxymist Clav Duo DS come with water for making up the syrup?
Yes. The glass bottle presentation is supplied with sterile water for reconstitution, so the dry powder can be made up into an oral suspension at the point of dispensing. Shake it before each dose and follow the label for how long the made-up suspension may be kept.
