Indications
- Upper respiratory tract infections including tonsillitis, pharyngitis and acute bacterial sinusitis
- Acute otitis media caused by susceptible organisms
- Lower respiratory tract infections such as acute bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia
- Susceptible urinary tract, skin and soft-tissue infections
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to amoxycillin, clavulanic acid, penicillins or any excipient in the formulation
- Previous jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with amoxycillin-clavulanate therapy
- History of a severe immediate hypersensitivity reaction to another beta-lactam, including cephalosporins
- Not appropriate in suspected infectious mononucleosis, where aminopenicillins commonly provoke a rash
Side effects
- Diarrhoea, loose stools, nausea or vomiting
- Skin rash, urticaria or itching
- Oral thrush and other candidal overgrowth during or after therapy
- Reversible rise in liver enzymes; rarely cholestatic jaundice or antibiotic-associated colitis, both of which need medical review

What is Almoxymist Clav DS used for?
Almoxymist Clav DS is prescribed for bacterial infections caused by organisms susceptible to amoxycillin with clavulanic acid, such as tonsillitis, sinusitis, acute otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia and susceptible urinary or skin infections. Whether it is the right choice for a given illness is a decision for the treating physician.
Why does Almoxymist Clav DS contain clavulanic acid as well as amoxycillin?
Many bacteria defend themselves by producing beta-lactamase enzymes that break amoxycillin down. Clavulanic acid 28.5 mg binds those enzymes, so the amoxycillin 200 mg survives to act on the organism. That is why the combination works against several strains that plain amoxycillin no longer covers.
How is Almoxymist Clav DS dry syrup prepared before use?
It is supplied as a dry powder and is reconstituted with the volume of water printed on the label, usually by the chemist at the time of dispensing. Shake the bottle well before every dose, measure with the device in the pack, and store or discard the made-up suspension exactly as the label states.
