Indications
- Correction and prevention of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency
- Nutritional rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults
- Adjunct to calcium in the management of osteoporosis
- Supportive supplementation where sunlight exposure or dietary intake is inadequate, including in older adults, and in pregnancy or lactation when prescribed
Contraindications
- Hypercalcaemia, hypercalciuria and established vitamin D toxicity
- Known hypersensitivity to cholecalciferol or to any excipient
- Severe renal impairment and calcium-containing renal stones
- Conditions associated with vitamin D hypersensitivity, such as sarcoidosis and other granulomatous disease, and concurrent high-dose vitamin D from other sources without medical oversight
Side effects
- Generally well tolerated at prescribed doses
- Excess intake can cause hypercalcaemia – nausea, vomiting, constipation, thirst and frequent urination
- Loss of appetite, metallic taste and abdominal discomfort
- Weakness, headache and confusion at toxic blood levels
- Prolonged excess may lead to renal stones or impaired renal function
