Indications

Management of hypocalcaemia and metabolic bone disease associated with chronic renal impairment, when prescribed
Hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism, where the already-activated form of vitamin D is required
Adjunct to calcium in the management of postmenopausal and senile osteoporosis
Vitamin D-dependent and vitamin D-resistant rickets and osteomalacia, under specialist supervision

Contraindications

Hypercalcaemia, or any evidence of vitamin D toxicity
Known hypersensitivity to calcitriol, calcium carbonate, zinc sulphate or any excipient of the capsule
Metastatic calcification; hypercalciuria or calcium-containing renal stones, unless the treating physician directs otherwise
Concurrent use of other vitamin D analogues, high-dose calcium supplements or calcium-containing antacids without medical supervision

Side effects

Symptoms of raised blood calcium: nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth, metallic taste, thirst, increased urination, weakness or headache
Hypercalciuria — serum and urinary calcium are usually monitored during treatment
Abdominal discomfort, bloating or constipation attributable to the calcium carbonate component
Gastric upset or nausea from zinc; uncommonly, rash or itching

Tell your doctor about any other calcium supplement or calcium-containing antacid you use.

Is the calcitriol in Gemsomist Capsule the same as ordinary vitamin D3?

No. Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) is a nutritional precursor that the liver and then the kidney must convert before the body can use it. Calcitriol is the end product of that conversion – the active hormone itself. It works without those steps, acts over a much shorter time frame, and is given in microgram amounts under prescription with calcium monitoring, so it is not interchangeable with a D3 supplement.
