- Essential hypertension in adults, alone or with other antihypertensive agents
- Sustained 24-hour blood pressure control, including early-morning readings
- Reduction of cardiovascular risk in adults with established atherosclerotic disease or type 2 diabetes with end-organ damage, where the physician judges it appropriate
- Hypertension in patients for whom an agent largely cleared by the biliary route is preferred
Contraindications
- Pregnancy, and women planning pregnancy – stop as soon as pregnancy is confirmed
- Known hypersensitivity to telmisartan
- Biliary obstructive disorders and severe hepatic impairment
- Bilateral renal artery stenosis, and concomitant use with aliskiren in diabetes or moderate to severe renal impairment
Side effects
- Dizziness or light-headedness, particularly when treatment is started
- Back pain and muscle pain
- Upper respiratory tract and sinus symptoms
- Raised serum potassium and, in susceptible patients, a rise in serum creatinine
- Symptomatic hypotension in volume- or salt-depleted patients

Can Telmamist 40 be taken by patients with kidney problems?
Telmisartan is eliminated mainly in bile rather than by the kidneys, so it is often usable in mild to moderate renal impairment. It is not suitable in bilateral renal artery stenosis, and renal function and serum potassium are usually monitored. Only your physician can make that assessment.
