Indications
- Pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by susceptible streptococci in children
- Acute otitis media due to susceptible organisms
- Acute maxillary sinusitis where a bacterial cause is considered likely
- Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections caused by susceptible bacteria
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefpodoxime or any other cephalosporin antibiotic
- Previous severe or immediate hypersensitivity reaction to penicillins or other beta-lactams
- Viral illness — colds, influenza and most coughs and sore throats gain nothing from a cephalosporin
- Significant renal impairment, or a past episode of antibiotic-associated colitis, unless the physician has specifically assessed the child
Side effects
- Loose stools or diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal discomfort
- Skin rash, itching or hives; seek help immediately for swelling of the face or lips or any breathing difficulty
- Oral or nappy-area candidiasis during or after a course
- Headache; rarely, severe or blood-stained diarrhoea suggesting Clostridioides difficile-associated colitis

That is how a partly treated infection relapses and how resistant strains gain ground. Finish the course your physician prescribed, and go back to them if the child is not improving or gets worse.
Is Podomic 50 D/S the same medicine as Podomic 100 D/S?
Same molecule, different concentration. Podomic 50 D/S has Cefpodoxime 50 mg per 5 ml and Podomic 100 D/S has 100 mg per 5 ml. The lower concentration suits smaller children, where a weight-based dose measured from a stronger syrup would be an awkwardly tiny volume. Never swap one strength for the other on your own u2014 the volume to give changes, and only your physician should recalculate it.
