Indications
- Symptomatic relief of dry, irritating, non-productive cough
- Cough accompanied by nasal congestion in the common cold and upper respiratory tract infection
- Cough with associated sneezing, rhinorrhoea and post-nasal drip of allergic or infective origin
- Night-time cough disturbing sleep, where a higher antitussive strength than Koughstop D is considered appropriate
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to dextromethorphan, phenylephrine, chlorpheniramine maleate or any excipient
- Concurrent use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or use within 14 days of stopping them
- Severe hypertension, coronary artery disease, hyperthyroidism, narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention or bladder neck obstruction, in which the phenylephrine and chlorpheniramine components are unsuitable
- Productive or chesty cough, and chronic cough associated with smoking, asthma or emphysema, where cough suppression is not appropriate
Side effects
- Drowsiness, sedation and impaired alertness from the chlorpheniramine component
- Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation or urinary hesitancy
- Dizziness, headache, nausea or gastric discomfort
- Palpitations, restlessness or a rise in blood pressure attributable to phenylephrine

What is the difference between Koughstop DX and Koughstop D?
The dextromethorphan strength. Koughstop DX contains Dextromethorphan HBr 15 mg per 5 ml, while Koughstop D contains 10 mg per 5 ml. Phenylephrine Hydrochloride 5 mg and Chlorpheniramine Maleate 2 mg are identical in both. DX is therefore the higher-strength antitussive option; your physician decides which is appropriate.
Does Koughstop DX syrup cause drowsiness?
It can. Chlorpheniramine maleate is a first-generation antihistamine that crosses into the central nervous system and commonly causes sedation. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the syrup affects you, and avoid alcohol while taking it.
Can Koughstop DX be used for a cough with phlegm?
It is formulated for dry, non-productive cough. Dextromethorphan suppresses the cough reflex, which is not usually wanted when a cough is bringing up phlegm. Tell your physician what the cough is like so the right preparation is chosen.
