Indications
- Symptomatic relief of dry, non-productive, irritating cough
- Cough and cold symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection
- Nasal and sinus congestion accompanying a cold
- Sneezing, rhinorrhoea, post-nasal drip and watery eyes of allergic origin
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to dextromethorphan, phenylephrine or chlorpheniramine
- Current therapy with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, or within 14 days of stopping one
- Productive or chesty cough, and chronic cough associated with asthma, emphysema or smoking
- Severe hypertension, coronary artery disease, hyperthyroidism, narrow-angle glaucoma; not for children below 4 years
Side effects
- Drowsiness and sedation, mainly from the chlorpheniramine component
- Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation and urinary hesitancy
- Palpitations, restlessness, headache or a rise in blood pressure from phenylephrine
- Nausea, dizziness and, uncommonly, gastrointestinal upset

What is Koughstop D syrup used for?
Koughstop D is prescribed for a dry, non-productive cough that comes with a blocked nose, sneezing and a runny nose — typically during a cold or upper respiratory allergy. It is not meant for a wet, chesty cough where bringing up phlegm is helpful. Use it as directed by your physician.
What bottle sizes does Koughstop D come in?
Koughstop D is supplied in two bottle volumes, 100 ml and 60 ml. The formula is identical in both; only the volume differs. Which size your chemist or distributor stocks may vary.
Does Koughstop D cause drowsiness?
Yes, it can. Chlorpheniramine maleate is a first-generation antihistamine and commonly causes drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how the syrup affects you, and avoid alcohol while taking it.
